On Saturday, 28 March, the Lycée Jules Verne in Pretoria came alive with colour, music, and international flair as it hosted this year’s vibrant Francophonie Festival. The event brought together over 2,000 people: communities, embassies, artists, and visitors in a joyful celebration of the richness and diversity of the French-speaking world.

The festival officially opened with inspiring speeches from the school principal, followed by representatives from four embassies, setting the tone for a day dedicated to cultural exchange and unity. From there, the stage transformed into a lively showcase of talent, featuring captivating performances by artists from across the Francophone world. Audiences were treated to the unique sounds of Reunion Island artist Ziia, the fresh and contemporary voice of Swiss singer Marie Jay, and the powerful performance of Greek artist Anna Poltzoglou.

Adding to the visual spectacle were dynamic Congolese fashion shows, where sapeurs brought elegance, creativity, and bold style to the stage — a true celebration of identity and expression.

Beyond the stage, visitors explored a rich array of stands hosted by 14 embassies, each offering a taste of their country’s culture. From Belgium to Tunisia, including Cameroon, Canada, Côte d’Ivoire, the Democratic Republic of Congo, the Republic of Congo, Cyprus, Egypt, France, Guinea, Mexico, Senegal, and Switzerland, guests enjoyed local delicacies, discovered tourism highlights, and engaged with cultural traditions from across the Francophone world and beyond.

The day was also filled with moments of fun and interaction, with prizes awarded on stage and opportunities for attendees to learn more about the participating countries in an engaging and festive atmosphere.

The Francophonie Festival once again proved to be a highlight on Pretoria’s cultural calendar — a celebration of language, diversity, and connection that brought people together in the true spirit of la Francophonie.
